Quilting Your T Shirt Quilt -Simple and Uniform

T Shirt Quilt Company designs 2 styles of T Shirt quilts : traditional and mosaic. The quilting patterns we use are a classic swirl on the traditional T Shirt quilt and a meandering swirl on the mosaic T Shirt quilt. We chose those 2 patterns for several reasons.:
  •  The quilting patterns are dense enough to secure the 3 layers of the T Shirt quilt but are not to dense to cause the shirts to bunch up.
  •  The quilting patterns add a uniformity to the T Shirt quilts. Most T-shirt quilts have shirts with different colors and designs. The swirl quilting patterns bring all the colors and designs together so your eyes will focus on the shirts and not the quilting patterns.
Look closely at the quilting on T Shirt quilts before you choose a tshirt quilt maker. Some t shirt quilt makers quilt each shirt differently. Different designs are quilted in each block. To me it looks “messy” and distracts from the t shirts. Quilting the T Shirt quilt block by block will also give you lots of starts and stops. The more starts and stops you have the less uniform it looks and it also increases the chance that the quilting will come “undone” during washings.
We also use thread that matches the sashing fabric. There are T shirt quilt makers who use a nylon or invisible thread on their quilts. This is done to save money on investing in lots of different colored thread. Not us! We use a cotton thread that has been produced especially for long arm quilting. It is durable and hard to break. We match it as close as possible to the fabric borders and the backing fabric. This adds to the uniform look and is not distracting.
